MISS. STATE, MS – Mississippi State University Libraries is proud to present lectures this spring in conjunction with African American Treasures from The Kinsey Collection.  This exhibit contains art, artifacts, documents and more that tell the often untold story of African American achievement and contribution.

On April 23 at 2:00 p.m. in the John Grisham Room, Dr. Shirley Hanshaw (Associate Professor, Department of English and African American Studies) will give a lecture entitled "'Myth of Absence': An Exhibition of African American Culture through Historical Documents, Photographs, and Art in the Kinsey Collection".  "The literary history of African American authors is a work in progress, as scholars are constantly discovering texts that have been previously unknown to the American reading public," say Dr. Hanshaw. The presentation will focus on the significance of several first-edition rare books by early African American writers on display in the Kinsey exhibition.

On May 20 at 4:00 p.m. in the John Grisham Room, Andrew Lark (Artist, Starkville High School Art Teacher) will discuss some of the artists and their art work found in the Kinsey Collection. Editor's Note: Due to extenuating circumstances this event has been cancelled.

About the Kinsey Collection:
The collection is presented by the Bernard and Shirley Kinsey Foundation for Art and Education. The organization seeks to educate the public about African American history by highlighting African American accomplishments over time, closing societal and cultural gaps between African Americans and other populations, and eroding the stereotypes undercutting equality.
