Last fall the MSU Libraries conducted a LibQ ual survey that gauged the faculty and students' perception of the library program and its services. Through that survey and other focus groups we have learned a great deal about faculty and student needs.
We were very pleased to see that the students greatly value the library facilities and services. It was clear throughout the survey that the students, especially undergraduate students, use the library and value the services provided. This sent a clear message that we need to continue to work on customer service and to continuously work to ensure the best possible service throughout the library program.
In an effort to continue enhancing the service provided by the Computer Commons, the largest public computer lab on campus, the reallocated a staff member to supervise and manage the Computer Commons Lab. This individual now has an office in the Computer Commons and will be able to directly supervise the lab. This will greatly enhance the customer service provided within the lab and continuity with training new student assistants.
We are also very pleased to announce that early this summer MSU's Information Technology Services (ITS) department replaced all of the computers in the Computer Commons Lab. The lab now has 85 thin client computers attaching to a VMWare Virtual Desktop Environment which should dramatically increase the performance and usability of the computers in the lab. The computers are all running Windows 7 and have 23" flat panel monitors.
We also have new iMacs in the Instructional Media Center located on the 2nd floor between Einstein Bros. Bagels and Access Services. In addition to the 4 new iMacs, there are 27 computers and a variety of scanners. If you need to scan a document, create a video or a presentation, come to the IMC. We have the Adobe Creative Suite with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign as well as Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premier for video capture and creation.
