2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the historic fall of the Berlin W all, and, in commemoration, a lecture and panel-discussion event will be held in Mitchell Memorial Library’s John Grisham Room.
“Remembering the Fall of the Berlin Wall, 1989 – 2009,” beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, November 9, 2009, will feature brief lectures and a panel discussion with the audience. MSU professors Stephen Brain, Jeff Cavanaugh, Alexandra Hui, Dagmar Radin, and Rick Travis will discuss and analyze the history of the Berlin Wall, the reasons it fell, and that event’s significance on today’s international environment. The commemorative event is sponsored by MSU Libraries, by MSU’s Department of Political Science and Public Administration and Department of History, and by the Bob and Judy Shackouls Honors College.
Accompanying the lectures and discussion will be a display featuring a piece of the Berlin Wall donated to Mississippi State University as a part of the Gilbert E. Carmichael Papers. Additionally, MSU Libraries’ Government Documents, Microforms, and Current Journals Department is hosting a semester-long Berlin Wall display featuring books, pamphlets, and posters from the German Missions in the United States’ “Freedom Without Walls” campaign to promote awareness among current college students. A research guide, created by MSU Libraries faculty Jason D. Phillips and Christine Fletcher, features resources available via the University Libraries as well as quality information from the Internet.
