Faculty and student researchers who rely on Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index will be pleased to learn that improved access to these important indexes is now available via a web-based index called Web of Science. Web of Science will replace the CD-ROM access to Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index and the print version of Arts & Humanities Citation Index. The change will resolve the problems users experience with the delivery of information from the CD-server and will greatly enhance the search capability for users of the print index. A team of librarians evaluated the functionality of Web of Science and unanimously recommended it over either the CD or print versions. The Libraries’ decision to switch to Web of Science was made in response to numerous faculty requests for the product and in consultation with department heads of the departments most concerned. The change will be financed through adjustments made within the Libraries’ budget.
Web of Science will provide seamless access and will enable users to search current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from approximately 8,500 of the most prestigious, high impact research journals in the world. Web of Science also provides a unique search method, cited reference searching. With it, users can navigate forward, backward, and through the literature, searching all disciplines and time spans to uncover all the information relevant to their research. The Libraries’ subscription will include a three-year backfile.
