MSU Web Site Recognizes Scholarship and Research of Current MSU Faculty
Mississippi State University authors now have a permanent web site to call their own, thanks to the efforts of the MSU Libraries. The newly revised and enhanced MSU Authors web site http://library.msstate.edu/msuauthors/ was originally created in 1997 as a project of the Giles Distinguished Professors. Since its inception, it has passed through a number of departments before being embraced as a permanent project of the MSU Libraries.
Dr. Michael Ballard, university archivist, said the web site is designed to allow current MSU faculty to share their achievement of publishing a monograph.
"The site is for MSU authors, a place where we can recognize their accomplishments," Ballard said. Ballard, who oversees the content of the web site, is working with the Libraries' Webmaster to keep the pages updated. It is up to individual authors, however, to provide information for the web site.
Using improvements implemented by Stephen, the site has been overhauled to allow MSU authors to submit their own updates, changes and additions to the web site.
"Once you log in to the site using your NetID and NetPassword, you will be able to view your current listing on the web site, make changes or additions. You will also be able to submit an image representing the front cover of your publication," Stephen said.
Once information has been submitted, Ballard will review this information, make any needed changes, and then immediately post the information to the web site.
If the book is available in the MSU Libraries, a link from the author's web site to the catalog entry in the Libraries' automation system will allow easy access to the call number of the requested publication.
Frances Coleman, Dean of the MSU Libraries, said she is pleased the Libraries can assist the university with this project. Her goal is to see the web site grow as more and more MSU authors take advantage of the opportunity to promote their work.
"We hope that the faculty will take the opportunity to update their listing on this web site," Coleman said.
She added that the library would welcome a donation of a copy of publications written by MSU faculty. "Such donations will assist us in providing further recognition of their work, appropriately represent our MSU faculty within the Library's collection, and further assist with the preservation of the publications of the university faculty."
