About

Mitchell Memorial Library Expansion Project

The eleven million dollar Mitchell Memorial Library Expansion Project, begun in July 2015, added 21,000 sq. ft. to the Library's northeast corner. Included in the expansion are spaces for the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library, The Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana, and the Congressional and Political Research Center.

Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library

The Library is home to the largest collection of Grant materials in the world. In addition to the new exhibit space created by the expansion, the Grant Library contains published and unpublished papers, artifacts, and nearly 10,000 Grant and Civil War-related published books that are maintained by Mississippi State University Libraries in an agreement with the Ulysses S. Grant Association.

The Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana

The Williams Collection, previously considered the nation's largest privately owned holding of Lincoln research and display material, as well as the country's most comprehensive privately owned Lincoln and Civil War library, will be officially gifted to Mississippi State University Libraries. The collection boasts rare historical memorabilia, artifacts, signed documents, ephemera, books, and artwork relating to Lincoln and the Civil War era and has been valued at nearly $3 million.

Congressional and Political Research Center

The CPRC was founded on November 12, 1999, with the purpose of providing access to the Center's numerous holdings of U. S. Congressional collections, papers of Mississippi legislators and other state offices, and local materials of various kinds. These materials were donated to the Center by the individuals whose public service careers they reflect. Oral histories, extensive photograph collections and memorabilia enhance the collections.
